Congratulations to our 9 - 10 year old District 27 Softball Champions!

9 year olds win the Upper Merion Tournament with 5 wins and 0 losses!

The Upper Providence 9 Year Old All Star Baseball Team won the Upper Merion Tournament by winning 5 straight games and outscoring their opponents 44 to 12. Outfielder Chris Boggs came up with three impressive catches that were game changers in conjunction with his timely hitting and David Cantello continued to be one of the top offensive threats in nine year old baseball with his extra base hits and clutch RBIs. The team posted an overall record of 16 wins and 2 losses for the season by playing their brand of team ball and getting key contributions from all of their players.

Facts Regarding Non-Wood Bats

"Little League supports the right of a local Little League to implement a wood-only rule, and we support any league’s right to make that choice for its local community. Some prefer the game played with wood bats, and that’s fine as well. But Little League International does not accept the premise that the game will be safer if played exclusively with wood, simply because there are no facts – none at all – to support that premise."

Spring Junior Baseball program returns

UPLL is offing a Junior Baseball program for 13 and 14 year old boys (age as of April 30, 2009) in 2009. This will be played on 90 foot bases with regular baseball rules. We'll begin in early March (weather permitting) and go through late June, including double-elimination playoffs. We will have practice during the week. The games will be on Saturdays from beginning some time between 9:00 and 6:00 and/or Sundays from 1:00 to 6:00. PA District 27 will schedule the games so some local travel will be involved. This league will be competitive however this is still a recreation league so all kids will play. We are hoping to have a Senior team (ages 15 and 16) if there is enough interest.

Contact Steve Gouveia for more information.

Challenger Information

The Challenger Division of Little League Baseball was established in 1989 to enable boys and girls with physical and mental disabilities, ages 5 through the completion of high school, to enjoy the game of baseball along with the millions of other children who participate in this sport worldwide.  Our UPLL Challenger program is a "play for fun" league which emphasizes fun and team participation.  Some kids hit from a batting tee, while others use "coach pitch", and everyone gets a chance to bat every inning.  We typically play 2-3 innings on the weekends against other Challenger teams from around the area.

Additional information on the Little League Challenger Baseball Division can be found at http://www.littleleague.org/divisions/challenger.asp

For further information about the UPLL Challenger program or if you wish to volunteer your time, please contact the Challenger League Commissioner: Frank Disanto.

2008 Little League New Rules

Little League implements pitch counts to protect pitchers' arms in 2007

Starting with the 2007 season, pitchers in all divisions of Little League, from age 7 to 18, will have specific limits on the number of pitches and specific periods of rest based on the number of pitches.  UPLL has updated our rules to document the mechanics of how this will be tracked.  See the links listed below for Little League's pitch count information.

Safety Information

2008 Safety Information

Your board at UPLL has been working all fall and winter to make the UPLL complex a safe and fun place to play ball. In addition to taking great care to fix up the fields, they are always working on the dugouts and lighting to ensure the safety of our children. It should also be noted that the dissengagable bases Little League has made mandatory starting this 2008 season have been used at UPLL for many years. It appears to me and, I hope, to you that many hours of thought go into safety at UPLL.

There are many other little things that you and I can do to make this season a safe one:

1- Clean up after each and every game and pick up trash you see.

2- Make sure your children’s shoelaces are tied.

3- If you see children fooling around in an area they shouldn’t, please let them or their parents know.

4- Bats should be carried in bags and not in the child’s hand while they are walking through the complex.

5- Do not let your younger children play unattended on the playground.

6- Wash uniforms frequently.

7- Ask your coaches to see if there is any way you can help at each game.

8- Drive slowly in the parking lot. Be vigilant to young ones running around.

9- Skateboarding should not take place in the parking lots during peak hours.

10- There should be no bike riding on any of the fields.

11- Report any injury you feel is significant, or may have been avoided.

12- Make sure all open wounds are covered.

MRSA Bacteria and Athletes

At UPLL we understand that some of you are concerned about the outbreak of the MRSA bacteria in our area this past year. We understand this concern and have put together some information which we hope will both help educate you and feel more confident that we at UPLL take this seriously.

Accident Reporting Procedures - What to Report?

An incident that causes any player, manager, coach, umpire, or volunteer to receive medical treatment, to receive first aid or if there is a concern that further medical evaluation may be required. The Injury Tracking form must be completed and reported to the league safety officer within 48 hours of incident.  The form should be filed in the Safety Officer’s mailbox located in the Snack Stand.  Please contact the Safety Officer if further information is required.
